| Wines and Cold Meats and Salami |
Eating, and feeding, is first and foremost one of man’s natural needs.
It is a physiological necessity, indicated by that symptom called 'hunger'.
But that is where nature ends and culture begins.
What we eat, how we eat, when we eat, how much we eat, whom we eat with, and why we eat, not to mention what we do while we eat, as well as before and after we have eaten.
All this is covered by social rules which have been worked out and built up over the centuries, and which vary enormously from place to place, as can be seen in literature, painting, sculpture and poetry throughout the world, right from the earliest beginnings of civilization.
And if this is true in general, it is all the more so in Tuscany, where that form of pleasure and knowledge known as food is in no danger of dying out and disappearing.
Does that need demonstrating ?
Let’s make a rapid tour of the wine and the cold meats of Colle di Val d'Elsa.
